A chance meeting of Allan Hallett and Vincent Reid at the Hilton Arts Festival started an idea of joining forces and opening their own gallery.

The Hallet Reid Gallery in Howick is the result of that chance meeting in Hilton.

Allen Hallett

Allen Hallett has been a bronze wildlife sculptor for the past 28 years, having been a game ranger for the Natal Parks Board, most of his time being spent in the wilderness areas of Umfolozi game reserve conducting walking trails and working on rhino capture and other reserve duties.

Allen’s wildlife bronzes can be seen at various fine art galleries in South Africa. While his work centres around mainly African animals he has recently started looking more towards rare and endangered birds like, hornbills, sunbirds and also some of the endangered raptors and especially falcons.

Among Allen’s latest projects is a Secretary Bird for Birdlife SA to raise funds for grassland conservation, a leopard sculpture called “Rockfig” from the Timbavati Game Reserve and a magnificent white rhino to assist with funds for Anti-poaching in Zululand and elsewhere. Allen is also very excited to be working with other important Wildlife Conservation organizations on various projects, including numerous endangered species.

He is hoping that through his art he is able to make a meaningful contribution to preserving Africa’s Wildlife.

Vincent Reid

Born in 1970 and raised on a farm in Zimbabwe, I have always been a close observer of the outdoors and every bit of spare time I had was spent in the hills or along the rivers of the family farm. Zimbabwe in the 80's was a socialist state and as a result, there was very little available by way of art materials in my high school art department, hence I started working in pencil, doing portraits and wildlife drawings for my friends.

After completing my schooling in Harare I studied interior design and worked for 18 years in the exhibition and events industry as a designer /business owner and during this time I focused almost entirely on computer aided design. This, together with the management and growing of my company, meant that creative expression took a back seat. In 2011, having grown disillusioned and unfulfilled in this line of work I made a life changing decision to pursue a full-time art career. My desire was to shake off the yoke of mediocrity which was prevalent in the industry and focus on developing my own most basic creative ability; drawing.

My family and I relocated to the country town of Howick in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands of South Africa so that I could pursue art as a career in peaceful, rural and creative environment; a move that has proven beneficial to all involved.

Art and the pursuit of my subject material has taken me to some of Southern Africa’s most beautiful locations and the wildlife and nature depicted has been observed in places such as Etosha National Park in Namibia, Mana Pools and Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe, Chobe National Park in Botswana, and Hluhluwe, Addo Elephant Park and Mapungubwe in South Africa.

"I am particularly fond of figures, birds and animals so I have combined these subjects in my some of my paintings. With the help of photography, I enjoy capturing unique moments in time and then portraying them in my art. I endeavour to capture the imagination of the viewer to leave a lasting impression."
